Preserve Independent at Home with a Medical Alert Service

The joys of living independently are largely responsible for creating a positive quality of life among adults of all ages and circumstances, and threats to that independence can be devastating. Though help is nearly always appreciated when it's truly needed, the idea that taking care of oneself will no longer be possible can be cause for depression and even diminished physical health. As a result, it's of great importance to attempt to preserve the independence of those who wish to retain it yet face serious challenges to effective personal care. A wide variety of causes may lead friends or family members to wonder whether a given person should be moved into an assisted living facility or other type of community home. Before such drastic steps are taken, however, considering the purchase of a medical alert service can prevent unwanted moves and keep those in potential danger and the people who care about them safe and secure.

Medical alert services provide users with the ability to rely on their very own accessible safety net, comprised of a base receiver unit similar to a phone or answering machine, and a wireless "panic button" that is worn at all times by the user. When such a system is purchased, a user and their loved ones can work with the service operator to define a list of emergency contacts. Should the user then experience an emergency and be unable to reach their regular phone, they can simply press the panic button, which sends a signal to the home unit, which in turn dials the alert service. An operator can speak with the user via a built-in microphone and speaker, and can contact the numbers specified on the emergency contact list. If necessary, or if the operator cannot hear the user, regular emergency services are called immediately.

Many modern medical alert service users are those with a high risk of heart attack or other cardiovascular emergencies. Managing heart health shouldn't have to interfere with personal independence, yet the possibility of becoming immobilized or in urgent need of medical help may make some heart patients or their families worried. Addressing this concern can easily be achieved through the use of a medical alarm service, as users and caregivers can be sure that fast, effective help will be on its way even if the patient is unable to reach a telephone or call out for assistance.

Whether for heart complications or other maladies, surgery sometimes requires careful attention to a patient's daily progress, and the risk of side effects, injuries, or relapses may be cause for concern. Many doctors recommend that certain surgery patients opt for a medical alert service during their recovery, as this small and relatively inexpensive device can take much of the stress out of healing while also reassuring friends and family. Rather than spend weeks or even months in a caregiving center, those with medical alert systems can recover in the comfort of their own homes.

In many cases, the motivation for considering a medical alert system stems simply from the realization that the user has reached a vulnerable age. Seniors are sometimes placed in nursing homes or other types of assisted care environments despite their wishes to remain independent, typically due to the risk of falling down stairs, slipping in the tub, or otherwise experiencing serious injuries. A medical alert system provides the elderly and their families with a way to combat both undesirable living situations and unattended accidents, making everyone feel more confident and capable. The ability to contact a child or other family member or even a neighbor through a medical alert service rather than auto-dialing 911 is especially useful for those who experience frequent minor mishaps that do not require emergency medical attention.

The broadening of choices available to people with exceptional medical needs owes much too modern technology, and taking advantage of the opportunity to remain independent is a major benefit of living in our time. Too often, those with pre-existing injuries or disabilities, or those reaching a certain age, have been nearly forced into accepting living circumstances outside of their comfort zones, leading to substantial financial costs, tense relationships, and even lowered self-esteem. By remaining independent, however, it's possible to preserve the all-important sense of personal power and ability, and thanks to medical alert monitoring, staying at home can be achieved without risking the unavailability of help. When accidents and injuries occur, medical alarm service users can expect a friendly and knowledgeable human operator to serve them with the care they need most, and concerned loved ones can feel at ease knowing the user will never have to face the unexpected alone. A medical alert service can help save lives --but it also helps save the feeling of independence vital to a happy and healthy life

My experience with suggesting a medical alert to people is...they do not want to admit it is time they need one. So your Hub is a great inspiration for people who may be hanging in the indecision zone. Great info!
